The 2010 WWA Australian Pro-Am
The 2010 WWA Australian Pro Am has been tagged as the most successful event ever run at Stoney Park. And whilst the wild weather hampered the overall crowd numbers, those on hand got to witness some amazing wakeboarding.
By Sunday afternoon, 13 new Australian Champions had been crowned, and everyone who made the podium took home a mind blowing swag of prizes thanks to some of the industry’s most dedicated and committed sponsors.
The wake of the Malibu Wakesetter VLX provided the perfect arena for the inaugural Pro Am to kick off and with competitors as young as 4 years of age hitting the water on the Saturday morning, it showed we were in for a massive weekend, and confirmed we have a big future for the sport in the years to come. Black Diamond Wakeboard School’s Scotty Kell drove the VLX perfectly all weekend and WWA’s hall of fame inductee Reece Jordan, and industry legends Paul Boyd & Mark ‘Turtle’ Macnamara proved their weight in gold and were right on the money in every division with their judging efforts.
With 13 new spots opened up for these division winners for the 2010 WWA World Titles in the USA in August, there is a renewed buzz of excitement again now for the rest of the 2010 season and the 2011 summer season ahead. In 2009, Australia claimed stake to 3 World Champions and with the level of riding on display this weekend at the Pro Am, 2010 could be even more rewarding for the Aussie Team.
The riding on parade of Dean, Harley, Jeff, Jarrod and Chris was world class. The organisers of the WWA Australian Pro Am have said that “it wouldn’t have been possible to have such an amazing event this weekend if it weren’t for the sponsorship contributions of all of our exhibitors and sponsors for the weekend, and we hope the industry gets behind these sponsors now to reward them for their support”. Red Bull had the biggest presence of all of our sponsors at the Pro Am with 4 beautiful sampling team girls there all weekend keeping the riders, and the entire town of Port Macquarie energised for the weekend, as well as contributing toward the cash prize pool and providing enough shade for a small army at the event, and it was evident how much they care about the wakeboard industry and are willing to get behind it to keep us all in the game.
Wakeboarding wasn’t the only excitement to be experienced over the weekend with Moto-X demos expanding our minds once again - these guys continue to amaze me at every turn. Not to mention the rock infused reggae tunes ‘The Greenroom’ all the way from the Sunshine Coast. “The spectators on the bank were stoked about the freestyle motocross and bands that were on between heats, so there was always something to look at.”
Official sponsors for the Pro Am were Red Bull, The WWAA, Malibu, Jet Pilot, Mountain Dew, Rip Curl, Liquid Force, Fox, Black Diamond, Skull Candy, JStar, KGB, Dragon Optical, Willi Footwear, Smith, Quest Water, 69 Slam, CWB, Banana Boat, Deja Vu Board Stores, The Port Macquarie Lifeguards, Yamaha Australia & Wake and Boarder Magazines.
